Artificial Intelligence and Mobility: DISCo and ReGAInS at ECAI 2024

Workshop Agents in Traffic and Transportation (ATT 2024)

This year, Santiago de Compostela hosted the 27th edition of the European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI), one of the most prestigious events in the field of artificial intelligence research. The conference, which was attended by internationally renowned researchers, professionals and academics, provides an important opportunity to discuss the challenges and innovations in this constantly evolving field.

One of the conference’s events was the ‘Agents in Traffic and Transportation’ (ATT 2024) workshop, coordinated by a group of prominent workshop chairs, featuring industry experts from universities across Europe. Among these figures was Professor Giuseppe Vizzari, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Systems and Communication (DISCo) at the University of Milan-Bicocca, who is directly involved in the ReGAInS Project – Reducing the Gap between Artificial Intelligence and Society.

The growing interest of the Artificial Intelligence community in the field of traffic and transport is in line with the increasing demand within the transport sector for safer, more efficient and more sustainable transport solutions, in terms of resource efficiency and environmental friendliness. During the workshop, we explored how these methods can make significant contributions towards addressing existing challenges within the transport sector, encouraging contributions on machine learning, deep learning and data-driven approaches that target specific problems in this field.
Among the most promising applications explored during the workshop were:

  • Autonomous vehicles and V2X communication: technologies that enable vehicles to communicate with one another and with infrastructure to improve safety and efficiency.
  • Intelligent transport systems: based on predictive approaches to manage complex traffic flows more effectively.
  • Advanced simulation models: these help to predict the impact of new mobility strategies before they are implemented.

In essence, the aim of the workshop is to promote collaboration between researchers and practitioners, by providing a platform for exchanging views on the modelling, simulation, control and management of large-scale transport systems.

The topics covered in the workshop are closely linked to the objectives of the ReGAInS project, which aims to bridge the gap between AI and society through inclusive, ethical and sustainable solutions, whilst promoting an approach to AI that respects society’s values and needs.
