Independent evaluation of the Department
Thanks to funding secured through the ReGAInS Department of Excellence Project, the Department of Computer Science, Systems and Communication at the University of Milan-Bicocca underwent an independent evaluation carried out by expert researchers from Informatics Europ
The Department of Computer Science, Systems and Communication (DISCo) at the University of Milan-Bicocca has undergone an independent evaluation carried out by the Informatics Europe association. This important initiative was made possible thanks to the ReGAInS Excellence project.
Why this assessment?
As well as supporting staff recruitment and the acquisition of key hardware resources, the ReGAInS project has provided DISCo with the opportunity to carry out an in-depth external review of its activities, with the aim of identifying strengths and areas for improvement. This evaluation forms an integral part of the Department’s commitment to continuous development and to achieving the highest standards of quality in research, teaching and community service.
Objectives of the Evaluation
The Informatics Europe assessment team carefully examined various aspects of DISCo, including:
- Research: Quality, innovation and impact of research activities in various fields.
- Organisational Structure: The effectiveness of the Department’s internal structure and its decision-making processes.
- Research Areas and Laboratories: Assessment of available resources and the organisation of the laboratories.
- Research Coordination, Fundraising and Scientific Dissemination: An analysis of strategies for securing external funding and disseminating research findings
- International Dimension: Assessment of international collaborations and the Department’s appeal to foreign researchers.
- Dissemination and Industrial Partnerships: An assessment of links with industry and the ability to translate research into practical applications.
How the Assessment Was Carried Out
The evaluation included a visit to the DISCo Department, during which a team of four researchers specialising in various fields of computer science met with Department staff, including researchers, technical staff and administrative staff. Meetings were also held with members of the University’s administrative and management staff, as well as key stakeholders such as representatives from companies and the BicoccAlumni association. Prior to the visit, the Department had prepared a detailed self-assessment report which provided a basis for the assessors’ analysis.
The Results: Insights for the Future
The final report drawn up by the evaluation team contains a number of valuable insights that DISCo will use to strengthen its activities, particularly those relating to research and the ‘third mission’ (technology transfer, social impact and continuing professional development).
The DISCo Department will now seek to act on the recommendations arising from the Informatics Europe evaluation, with the aim of consolidating its position of excellence on the national and international stage.
